I model as a hobby, and the site I work through is negatively influenced by more seasoned professional or amateurs. Instead of growing, the site remains static because new members are scared off by the biting criticism.

What’s surprising is that the most negative ones are folks who work in completely different markets than newbies do. In any event, even if another model is ‘the competition’ I fail to see how it serves anyone in the profession to behave poorly towards one another.

There’s even facebook site in which these same members get together to make fun of other folks in ways they are not permitted to do on the site. Instead of focusing on being more creative, these folks have not done anything new or out of the box in years.

It was shocking at first when I was the recipient of such vitriol when I asked a simple question on the site. Now when I have time, I send personal messages to new members telling them that they should find members whose work they respect and ask them for help instead of inviting the ‘mean girls’ for opinions. That’s the best I can do. And ignoring the noise myself, which is hard to do.
