That I have helped them in some way is such an added bonus, it’s one of those things that can not be explained- words sort of screw it up. Regardless, I am so happy to facilitate personal reflections in this way, each image carries it’s own energy and power and I am so happy to explore this with all of you!

The past few days I have been carting around some new form of anxiety. It’s surprisingly not showing outwardly- maybe I’m finally learning the difference physiologically between excitement & anxiety…

Either way I believe it’s stemming from fumbling around the launch of my studio portraits. When I started this (opening my little studio) I knew what I was up against inside myself. That I am most definitely my own worst enemy. That I have to figure out most of what I am to do myself. That only I would be the one to make it work, or destroy it all. A conundrum at it’s finest…

So I stood quietly in the middle of my studio, surrounded by all of my equipment, my work, and took a moment to pray and thank. Because there really isn’t much else left to do when you are only up against your belief in the Self.

I knew going into this that I had created my perfect opponent- the one adversary that knows each weakness and each strength, knows each chemical and can undermine each moment of stability by simply cuing “instability”. The only way for this to work out is for me to understand this. But that is NOT saying that there is action in merely understanding the “problem”. The upswing here is that by quietly checking these things out I can see, first hand, how I created these things and that I can do something about it. AND that something is simple- when I start arguing with myself I stop and feel- which part of my system is activating…? And depending on the location, I have my answer … for now… and my personal power is there, regardless of my self-inflicted adversary of the Self.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when we are given a shift. This shift is like “get in or swim” and they both move you in a direction. Both are hard work- you may choose to get in the boat and not be given any oars.

What happens around these new “openings” is really key. It takes more than just saying YES. That is the beginning of the work- of course because NO is obviously not a beginning. Sometimes you say ‘yes’ and then the universe takes you by the pinkie toes and shakes you out like a sheet in the wind.

This is where I am.

Arranging my little studio into a mini gallery space was so much fun, a lot of work, but definitely a good time! Seeing an assortment of all of my series’ from the past few years together proved to be very valuable information. So many people came in on Saturday at a couple of points there wasn’t enough room to move in there!

Ultimately the weekend was a complete success! What people were saying about my work was so complimentary- but not the fluffy kind- actual comments about my process, my line work- years of “practice” shining through. Most appreciated by the visitors was that I do it all myself. My work is based on my own photography- my own direct environment- that I could speak on all components separately and tell a story of not my process, but the life of the piece. That they appreciated my engagement with them was even more astounding.

“Most artists we’ve seen today do not have so much to say, we haven’t really been engaged in that much conversation today…”

Wait, What? Me? I had to chuckle out loud and I shocked them with my response. “I have to be honest, this isn’t as easy for me as it might seem. I actually do have a hard time with this.” To which he responded “No, you are seamless” …

So, all in all, I have learned a lot this past weekend.

I am happy to announce that the Chicago Installment of the Billboard Art Project  is going to happen very soon!

I have always wondered what my work would look like on billboards so I think it’s super funny that it is somewhere that I can’t see them in person. I was just in Berkeley today and on the way I realized that we have the same kind of image changing billboards along the bridge exit… I wonder how hard it is to get this to happen…?

But anyhooo…

The schedule is as follows:

The schedule for the Chicago Billboard Art Project will be divided into four weeks, with a selection of artists appearing each week.  Each week will feature new artists, whose work will be shown in a rotation Monday through Friday.  On Saturday and Sunday ALL participants’ work will be shown in a weekend rotation.

I am part of WEEK ONE

along with 19 other artists.
