photographic representation of faern

June 16, 2010 · 1 Comment

sometime yesterday i started implementing some really great things as the precursor to some other  important changes just around the bend!

what is this you ask? this first step?

PICTURES!

Last week i took some time out of creating to step into myself a little bit, as i said hello to my future in joshua tree last month, this month i got pictures taken! this, if you know me, is no easy feat- being a photographer for so long doesn’t make this any easier- as some “accuse me” of- im here to tell you- IT’S NOT SO. just because i can see the picture does not mean that my brain will leave the scene so that my Self can come through- at least that’s the way it normally is- well, used to be- and especially not when

becky hurwitz and i get together

i started using this image around-

"we are working around here" -photo by becky hurwitz

its here:

http://faern-in-the-works.com/about/

and since it seems these pics are already getting some views, i’ll add this link here-

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bexhurwitz/sets/72157624154765777/

even if im not that ready to share the lot, its live online on flickr sooooo bye bye insecurities, hello new photo representation of faern.

xo

PS

i also put this one here

but i am unsure if that matches the feeling of that work yet…..

POSE OF THE MONTH: Ardha Matsyendrasana

April 29, 2010 · 2 Comments

POSE OF THE MONTH: Ardha Matsyendrasana (Lord of the Fishes Pose or Half Spinal Twist)
With Chrisandra Fox

In the Tantric universe, Shakti represents infinite energy and the catalyst for change, and Shiva represents supreme consciousness. In other Hindu systems, Shakti is the divine feminine creative power, embodied in the feminine form and as fertility. Shakti is the energy that animates and is interdependent with the entire universe.

Picture this: Shiva is meditating, deep in stillness, and all is well. His beloved consort, Parvati—an embodiment of Shakti—sneaks up from behind and covers both his eyes.

The entire universe begins to shake, the pulsation causing great movement, activity, darkness, and the imminence of death. Shiva’s third eye opens as a blazing sun, and again, all is well as Shiva regains quiet stillness.

In the physical body, when we practice twists, we enter the dance of these two lovers—the masculine and feminine, consciousness and energy. According to the tradition, the cosmic feminine energy lies dormant as the coiled serpent and spiritual potential within each of us, Kundalini. Upon activation, this cosmic energy emanates forth in spiral waves, and within this spanda, we experience the rising of Kundalini Shakti, the energetic spiritual potential of the individual.

According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, when ardha matsyendrasana is practiced, prana and apana vayus are brought together in the navel center, thus activating this process of awakening knowledge of the Self.

Ardha Matsyendrasana is named for the great fish, Matsyendranath, who overheard the teachings of yoga by Lord Shiva to Parvati, and who reincarnated to be one of the worlds greatest yogis.

This deep twist stimulates digestion and detoxification, balances the parasympathetic nervous system, stimulates liver and kidneys, energizes the spine, and can be therapeutic for sciatica, infertility, and asthma.

In practicing this seated twist, we can attune to the great spanda, and experience the subtle spiraling pulsations of energy that make up all of creation. Awareness of these waves brings us more deeply into an awareness of prana shakti, or the power of who we are, not just as physical beings, but as beings with a spiritual nature. As we attune to this energy, we may become more aware of our place within the entire universe, and grow within this awareness to realize the fullest expression of our unfolding, creative Self.

The Pose

Prepare for this seated twist with standing postures, including standing twists and poses that help open your hips and shoulders.

Sit in Dandasana (staff pose). Extend both legs, and place your hands alongside your hips. If your low back is rounded, sit on the edge of a blanket, so that your pelvis remains in an upright position, and you maintain your lumbar curve.

Bend your left knee and place your left foot to the outside of your right knee. You can work from this position if your hips are tight. Otherwise, bend your right knee and place your foot close to your outer left hip.

Place your left hand behind your back, close to your pelvis, and hug your left thigh in towards your chest with your right arm.

Keep an active press through the base of your left big toe, and drop the weight of the right side of your pelvis towards the ground.

Inhale and left your chest. On an exhalation, draw your navel towards your spine and twist to your left. Use your inhalation to lengthen your spine, and your exhalation to deepen the twist. You may also raise your right arm alongside your ear, lengthening the right side of your body as you inhale. If the flexibility is there, sweep your right arm to the outer left thigh on an exhalation, and maintain pressure between your arm and thigh. From here, you can bend your elbow and point your fingers towards the sky, or, if your elbow clears your left shin as you extend your arm, rest your hand on your left foot.

Twists invoke a beautiful, deep contracting aspect in the organs, while creating space for the breath to fill and expand the back body. Gently fan your back ribs and expand your kidneys as you empty your belly and coil your ribs into the twist.

Feel the twist arising from deep in your belly and low spine, and allow your heart to follow the twist. Turn your head, so that you are gently twisting your neck in the line of your spine. Continue to deepen your sense of grounding through your sitting bones as you create spiral action in your spine.

Now, tune into the spiral action by lengthening your exhalation and creating space for your next inhalation. Turn your neck in the direction opposite the spine, and turn your chin towards your right shoulder.

Twists help us challenge our habitual patterns of mind by inviting new patterns of be-ing in our bodies. As we squeeze our organs and tap into the spiral action of the twist, we are asked to move our breath into different parts of our bodies, while finding equanimity in the twist. This can influence a shift in our awareness and ways of thinking.

Take time in the twist to make sense of your new orientation, using the breath as your guide for understanding the pattern of the twist.

When you are ready to come out, use an inhalation to slowly release your spine, and gently twist in the opposite direction, offering a brief counter-balance to the strong spiraling energy.

Bring your spine to neutral and sit, witnessing the subtle pulsations of energy, and the radiant dance within your Shakti-full being before coming into the second side.

reaching and snapping

April 26, 2010 · 3 Comments

so, its official

i am all jazzed up right now and in total confusion

say it now

this change thing is weird

there is a complete lack of understandable focus, but i am completely clear

meaning- just don’t ask, im moving through at a rapid pace and if you ask me to explain i will lose my place. well, not lose, just it changes when you give it words.

baggage fly

i will not go back to where i was

and i am not staying like this

so here i am flinging words around in my head

tossing them into proverbial baskets and cataloging them

almost like a huge game of

little tiny words on crumpled up papers in some hat

or, hanging from a clothesline completely in reach

even thgough its also swinging in the sky, this clothesline

and here we are reaching and snapping

re-tying and reaching

cala eyes

thanks for reading

April 25, 2010 · 1 Comment

during the past few weeks or days or minutes i have had a very interesting time “expressing” myself.

regresar

i mentioned this briefly here: http://faern-in-the-works.com/2010/04/22/i-havnt-been-writing-much-lately/

i have gone through modes of astounded-ness

creative withdrawal

creative influx and creative loss

but most generally i am paying very close attention to how i am treated, how i treat other people and how others treat other people.

7 of hearts

it has come to my attention that in my opinion i have lost my way, regardless of how some people seek out a negative understanding of that statement, it gravely is not- i have not done anything “wrong” in terms of my path, all i’m saying is that with a world of options there is still a world more.

i will never regret where i have been, and i hold dear every little second of pain and triumph- but its quite clear at this time to me that my biggest accomplishment to date is being there for my mom in her last hours / months / however you want to look at it.

i am ever grateful for the few people that helped me, but i am even more grateful for those that ignored me, your friend, a part of your community in the most trying time to date that not many can empathize with, and that they can not- i am also grateful for-

you heard me right and i am saying it out loud- you ignored your friend when she was caring for her mother in her dieing hours-

and that is the last time i am going to say it. what that has done is change my view . period.

i, understand that its not easy to talk about

i do understand that it sucks

i also do understand that all you had to say was,~hey, i love you, you are doing the right thing but this is too hard for me, too close to home, i have no words -ANYTHING

CL1

but what came from this space was astounding-

first of all, as i said i have a lot to be grateful for~

*my mom’s friends have turned into new mom’s for me in a sense, they have gifted me with an astounding amount of awesome things about my mom

*when i was caring for my mom, my own personal health issues came back in full force and became very dangerous in such a stressful situation- there are people that cared for me from afar in a way i can never underestimate with wordy descriptions and they’re work is extremely personal of the shamanic nature so i will keep their names out of this posting, but they know who they are- i received counseling, clearings, asana, meditations. i also received hundreds of dollars in herbal remedies and emergency stress care-

*online friends, those in which we have never graced time and space together for but in the virtual land- you were there- at odd times for chats about everything, and nothing- and we barely know each other

*my friends that did take the time to talk to me that reached out during the time of care- there are very few people to put here, but i feel weird about putting a list of names and such- im not calling people out, i just want you know know i have noticed and i am grateful

*yoga tree (again, names out for a reason- you know who you are )  gave me some really awesome jivamukti classes from jules fabre when i came back to s.f. for a short visit to get my health back in check which was right before i was returning for the most difficult time in the whole thing, and without that reminder i am sure i would not have been able to sing mantra to my mom in her silence and reel in the most important relationships i am still now developing, and will continue too.

*take note of this: i am not angry, i am not upset- this is called grieving and changing

this weird post was extremely difficult to write as are finding gifts in the muck of life- they are there you just have to pick them up and wipe them off.

tuxedocat

i am still caught of guard when my heart says ” really, did this all happen” or ” i cant believe she’s gone”

and most importantly, the one most difficult thing about returning to regular asana class schedule falls right in the first few minutes of each and every class

the dedication

for years i have been dedicating almost each and every class to my mom, sooner or later when the teacher asks us for a dedication the twinge in my heart will be a comforting one, but for now my dedication is to not burst into tears when i cant choose because of the reminder.

on city
